Council-sponsored Roadside Edibles
Edible roadside gardens exist in shires throughout Australia. People can stop to pick fresh fruit or vegetables. An example of this is Costa Georgiadis' 'On The Verge' edible nature strip in Bondi, NSW.
The ABC's national TV show 'Gardening Australia' has been documenting this roadside food patch since March 2012.
In setting up a roadside garden Costa advises, 'Another thing that I'd strongly recommend is to do a little bit of research. It'll give you a feel for what other communities are doing in your area with their verges.
'It's also critical to check with your local council and be sure that you follow their recommendations and their guidelines - simply things such as leaving space for car doors to open. Each council has their own rules and regulations about using verge space, so before you start, make sure you have full approval from your local council.'

The townships of Foster, Leongatha and Wonthaggi in Victoria's Gippsland have roadside edible gardens, with no traffic problems.
