Good news - a reprieve for roadside fruit trees!
This report is just in from Latrobe City Council in Gippsland:
'Our outdoor maintenance team and arborist teams are going to work with our internal Environment Sustainability team to update our current roadside management practices so that it is consistent with native vegetation permitted clearing regulations under the Planning & Environment Act (however, native vegetation is not the current issue). We will also need to consider those social, health and economic values mentioned earlier. They will also provide advice on the weed management regulations under the Catchment and Land Protection Act, and management of environmental weeds in bushland areas in general.
'In the meantime, our tree crews have been advised not to remove fruit trees from road reserves unless it is deemed to be an absolute necessity from a public safety point of view.'
Congratulations to Latrobe City Council!
